DANAULT ‘S WINNER GIVES RED WILD WIN OVER WHITE CALGARY, Alta. – Phillip Danault (Victoriaville, Que./Victoriaville, QMJHL) completed his hat trick on a penalty shot with less than five minutes to go as Red earned bragging rights for at least one day with a crazy 8-7 win over White on Sunday night at the National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team selection camp. Danault combined with linemates Austen Brassard (Windsor, Ont./Belleville, OHL) and Daniel Catenacci (Newmarket, Ont./Sault Ste. Marie, OHL) for nine points as Red fought back from 6-5 and 7-6 deficits to earn the win in the first of three intersquad games. Danault had an assist to go along with his hat trick, while Catenacci had a goal and an assist and Brassard a goal and two helpers. Red looked to have the game well in hand after Brassard made it 4-1 at the 6:32 mark of the second period, but White tied the game with three goals in 4:31 and took a 6-5 lead to the second intermission thanks to late goals from Scott Harrington (Kingston, Ont./London, OHL) and Mark McNeill (Edmonton, Alta./Prince Albert, WHL). The two teams combined for nine second-period goals, with White doing all of its damage in a span of 10:30. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (Burnaby, B.C./Red Deer, WHL) pulled Red even six minutes into the third period, but Myles Bell (Calgary, Alta./Regina, WHL) restored the White led at 11:59, sneaking in from the point to snap a low shot past Jeffrey Noonan (Laval, Que./Laval-Montreal, LHMAAAQ). Red tied the game once again just 54 seconds after Bell’s goal off the stick of Michael St. Croix (Winnipeg, Man./Edmonton, WHL), setting the stage for Danault’s game winner. All penalties in the game resulted in penalty shots, which allowed for Danault’s heroics. The two teams meet again Monday night (7 p.m. MT) before wrapping up camp Tuesday morning (11:30 a.m. MT). All games are at Father David Bauer Olympic Arena. Following Tuesday’s game, the coaching staff will choose a 22-player roster that will represent Canada at the 2010 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. |
