BLUE SHUTS OUT RED; EARNS THIRD STRAIGHT WIN TORONTO, Ont. – Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, Ont.) scored once and added four assists as Blue remained the only unbeaten team at the National Women’s Program selection camps with a one-sided 11-0 win over White on Tuesday night at the MasterCard Centre. Wakefield – who was centralized with Canada’s National Women’s Team prior to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games – had a goal and an assist in a seven-goal first period and added three more helpers in a span of 4:17 in the second period as Blue finished a sweep of the two under-18 teams at camp – it beat White 5-1 on Monday. In total, 15 players racked up at least a point for White, with seven different players finding the back of the net in the opening 20 minutes. Natalie Spooner (Scarborough, Ont.) kicked off the scoring parade less than two minutes in before she and Rebecca Johnston (Sudbury, Ont.) helped set up Melodie Daoust (Valleyfield, Que.) for the 2-0 goal less than three minutes later, and Wakefield made it 3-0 from Isabel Menard (Ottawa, Ont.) 65 seconds after that. After a 10-minute lull in the scoring, Blue turned it up late in the opening frame, as Jenelle Kohanchuk (Winnipeg, Man.) jumped on a loose puck and beat Red goaltender Brianna Piper (Oakville, Ont.) to make it 4-0. Johnston pushed the lead to 5-0 before Katelyn Ptolemy (Dinsmore, Sask.) and Jessica Campbell (Melville, Sask.) scored 20 seconds apart to cap off a wild first period. Despite a seven-goal lead Blue refused to take its foot off the gas in the second period, scoring four more goals in the middle frame and hitting double digits just 13:39 into the second period. Vicki Bendus (Wasaga Beach, Ont.) took advantage of a scramble in front of Piper to make it 8-0, while Wakefield set up Vanessa Emond (Lévis, Que.) and Menard twice to make it an 11-0 game after 40 minutes. Ann-Renée Desbiens (La Malbaie, Que.) replaced Piper between the pipes midway through the second, while Amanda Mazzotta (London, Ont.) went the distance for Blue, which wraps up camp against Yellow, its U22 rivals, on Saturday. |
