Alberni Valley welcomes the 2009 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge

The 2009 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge group from the Alberni Valley joined forces this afternoon with its partners from across the central island, Hockey Canada staff and several high profile guests to outline its organizational approach and to introduce the volunteers who will hold key roles in the hosting of this prestigious event. A list of directors is attached along with a details on our partner communities and their facilities.

Hockey Canada’s Manager of Marketing Services and Events, Ryan Robins, was on hand to confirm that Germany, Russia, Finland, Slovakia and the United States will compete at the tournament along with teams from five regions across our own Country (Team Pacific, Team Atlantic, Team West, Team Ontario, Team Quebec). Tournament dates were confirmed as to . Several exhibition games will be played prior to Dec. 29th.

Port Alberni’s Mayor spoke proudly of his communities’ ability to attract tournaments of this magnitude. Ken McRae cited the completion of the Alberni Valley Multiplex in 2001 as a critical factor in our capacity for hosting an international event along with the incredible volunteer legacy we have to draw from now through prior efforts such as the BC Games.

Host Committee Chair Ron Paulson addressed other key components including:

Event funding and sponsorship opportunities and a limited ticket pre-purchase program to be launched in early December. Paulson also commented on the creation of a local web site that is expected to be operational within the next 60 days which will provide a connection to event organizers for host communities and volunteers.
