GRIFFIN’S GOAL GIVES FLYERS BRONZE AT ESSO CUP by Derek Kelly Neumeier The Calgary Flyers are the 2009 Esso Cup bronze medalists thanks a spirited 3-2 victory over their provincial rivals, the Edmonton Thunder, on Saturday morning in Calgary.
After having their winning streak snapped by Scarborough in the semifinals, the host Flyers bounced back strong against Edmonton, playing a complete game and outshooting their feisty opposition 42-25. The Flyers exploded out of the gate to start the first, quickly taking control of the puck. Forward Sadie Lenstra got her team on the board first 9:50 in the frame, firing a quick shot through a screen, which ended up being the only goal of the period. Calgary held a 17-7 shot advantage after one. They extended their lead to 2-0 midway into the second on a similar play when forward Ferran Brown slid a backhand through traffic that Thunder goaltender Morgan Glover never saw. Sending players to the front of the net was a tactic that Calgary utilized all game long, setting up screens and generating many scoring chances off of rebounds. Calgary tried to put the game out of reach but was continually stymied by Glover, who made 39 saves in the game and earned Player of the Game honours for her team. Edmonton brought themselves back into the game not long after thanks to a goal by Ali Campbell, cutting the lead to only 2-1, which is how the score would stay going into the final frame. Edmonton started the third period aggressively, knowing that their chance at a medal was on the line. However, it was Calgary’s Shawna Griffin that scored the next goal, a backhander to make the lead 3-1. Edmonton refused to quit and narrowed the lead to 3-2 with a 4-on-4 goal by Calaine Inglis with only 1:38 to go. The Thunder used every last ounce of energy they had to score another to tie the game and had a handful of great scoring chances, including a missed backhand by Brittany Esposito right in front of the net, but couldn’t convert as the Flyers hung on for the one-goal victory. |
