Quebec takes it to Ontario Blue

Ontario Blue and Quebec faced off in the first contest of the 2004 Women’s Under-18 Championship on Wednesday afternoon. Quebec was led to victory thanks to the dominant play of Jesse Scanzano who chipped in an assist and was named Quebec’s player of the game. Scoring for Quebec were Claudia Bergeron, Jackie Duncan, Jessica Lebeau and Ann-Sophie Bettez. Ontario’s lone goal came from forward Vicki Bendus. Kathy Desjardins was solid in goal for Quebec stopping 25 of 26 shots, including 10 in the first period allowing her team to gain the momentum that they carried to victory.

Solid goaltending leads Saskatchewan over Alberta

Team Saskatchewan’s player of the game, goaltender Kayley Heman, stole the show in Wednesday’s game between Saskatchewan and Alberta. Heman stopped 38 of 39 shots and led her team to a 2-1 victory over Alberta. Both teams converted once on the power play as Samantha Hunt (AB) and Karissa Swan (SK) both scored with the man-advantage for their teams. Hunt, Alberta’s player of the game, had a chance to tie the game with little time remaining as she broke in alone on Heman, only to have Heman make the blocker save giving Saskatchewan the win.

Ontario Red controls play against Manitoba

Ontario Red took it to Team Manitoba early and often as they outshot Manitoba 42-15 in Wednesday’s first evening game. Despite allowing four goals, goaltender Melissa Kunzelman was named Manitoba’s player of the game while Christina Kessler of Ontario recorded the first shutout of the tournament casting aside 15 shots. Mallory Delluce, Jasmine Giles, Morgan Marziali and Trudy Reins all scored for Ontario Red.

BC edges Atlantic

British-Columbia defeated team Atlantic by a 4-2 score in front of a boisterous home crowd. It was a chippy afair all night as the teams combined for 15 penalties, 7 of which were the result of body checking. B-C. was led by the hard-working line of Leanne Wong, Melissa Anderson and Breanna Burton as the trio combined for three goals and five points. Wong, scored both the game winner and the insurance goal while Anderson, BC's player of the game, opened the scoring for BC. Elyce Thomas also tallied for BC. Team Atlantic's goals came from Shana Noteworthy and Stephanie Roy.
