MANITOBA WINS BRONZE WITH TIGHT WIN OVER ATLANTIC For the first time since 2001 – when they joined with Saskatchewan to form Team West – Manitoba has won a medal at the National Women’s Under-18 Championship, taking home the bronze after a 3-2 win over Team Atlantic in Sunday morning’s third-place game. Jenelle Kohanchuk scored the game-winner 7:39 into the final period as Manitoba finally left the U18 Women’s Nationals with something around their necks after back-to-back bronze medal game losses at the January 2005 and November 2005 national championships. They avenged their 3-1 loss to Team Atlantic in the third-place game at the latter. Manitoba captain Chelsea Karpenko – who picked up Player of the Game honours for the victors – scored twice and Tara Lacquette turned aside 16 shots between the pipes to register the win in her first action of the tournament. Twice Team Atlantic fought back to pull even, only to see the Manitobans take the lead shortly after. Karpenko notched her second goal of the first period only 18 seconds after Kim Deschênes had tied the game 1-1, and Kohanchuk’s game-winner came just 1:23 after Janie Leblanc had equalized for Team Atlantic. Sarah Davis, who had two assists, was named Player of the Game for Team Atlantic, while Melissa Murphy made 29 saves, albeit in a losing cause. |
