QUICK START HELPS QUEBEC TO VICTORY
Vanessa Plante and Audrey Bélanger-Cournoyer scored in first 90 seconds as Quebec remained perfect at the
National Women’s Under-18 Championship with a 5-1 win over Ontario Blue on Thursday night.
Ariane Barker also added a first-period goal and Player of the Game Marie-Philip Poulin had two goals and
two assists – giving her eight points in two games – for Quebec (2-0), who outshot Ontario Blue 34-22 in the
win. Bélanger-Cournoyer added three assists to her goal, pulling even with Poulin for the tournament scoring
lead.
The win assures Quebec of a semi-final spot, and they can lock up first place in Group B with a win over
Team Atlantic on Friday afternoon (4:00 p.m. ET). Quebec has lost just four games at the last three U18
Women’s Nationals, and three of those losses were gold medal game defeats to Ontario Red – Team West, with a
5-0 win in 2001, is the other to score a win.
Ally Tarr – who was named Player of the Game for her team – scored the lone goal for Ontario Blue (0-2),
who saw their gold medal hopes vanish with the loss. They wrap up the round robin on Friday afternoon against
B.C. (1:00 p.m. ET) in a battle of winless teams.
