ONTARIO RED INTO FINAL AGAIN, WILL GO FOR SEVENTH GOLD MEDAL

SAGUENAY, Que. – Jaimie McDonell (East York, Ont.) scored a hat trick to lead the way as Ontario Red advanced to the gold medal game at the National Women’s Under-18 Championship for the seventh time in a row with a 5-1 semifinal win over Team Atlantic on Saturday night.

Ontario Red will go for its seventh gold medal on Sunday afternoon (4 p.m. ET) against the winner of Saturday’s late semifinal between Quebec and Manitoba.

Team Atlantic opened the scoring just past the midway point of the first period thanks to Shannon MacAulay (Mount Herbert, P.E.I.), but that would be the only puck to beat Elaine Chuli (Waterford, Ont.), who needed to make just 10 saves to record the win.

McDonell tied the score just less than five minutes after MacAulay’s goal, converting a feed from Morgan Richardson (Ottawa, Ont.), daughter of former NHLer and Team Canada alumnus Luke Richardson.

Despite outshooting Team Atlantic 15-3 in the second period, Ontario Red could manage just one goal, as Sarah Nurse (Hamilton, Ont.) set up Hilary Lloyd (Toronto, Ont.) to send the Ontarians to the dressing room up a goal.

Rebecca Kohler (St. Thomas, Ont.) pushed the lead to two early in the third period, and McDonell scored two goals late, capping off her hat trick into an empty net.

Team Atlantic will await the loser of the Quebec-Manitoba semifinal in Sunday’s bronze medal game (noon ET).
