DESBIENS MAKES 47 SAVES TO HELP QUEBEC REACH GOLD MEDAL GAME SAGUENAY, Que. – Ann-Renée Desbiens (La Malbaie, Que.) made 47 saves and Catherine Dubois (Quebec City, Que.) scored twice to lead Quebec to a 6-1 semifinal win over Manitoba on Saturday night and a spot in the gold medal game at the 2011 National Women’s Under-18 Championship.
In front of home province fans at the Centre Georges-Vézina, Quebec jumped out to a 5-0 lead early in the third period and advanced to the final for the sixth time in seven tries. Only in 2009, when it lost in a shootout to Ontario Blue in the semifinals, did Quebec not play for gold. Outshooting Manitoba 17-7 in the first period, Manitoba struck for a pair of goals late in the period, first off the stick of Mélodie Bouchard (Sept-Îles, Que.) and then from Dubois just 43 seconds later. The lead became three just 1:54 into the second period when Camille Pauck-Therrien (Boucherville, Que.) beat Manitoba netminder Amanda Schubert (Winnipeg, Man.), and Alexandra Labelle (St-Louis-de-Gonzague, Que.) made it 4-0 before the end of the middle frame. The Manitobans turned it on in the third period, outshooting Quebec 21-6, but a shorthanded goal from Vickie Lemire (St-Lazare, Que.) made it 5-0 before Meghan Dufault (Winnipeg, Man.) ended Desbiens’ shutout bid. Dubois rounded out the scoring with just over six minutes to go for Quebec. On Sunday, Quebec will meet Ontario Red (4 p.m. ET, TSN2/RDS) with hopes of winning its first national championship, while Manitoba will take on Team Atlantic (noon ET) with the bronze medal on the line. |
