KRZYSZCZYK GETS WINNER AS MANITOBA TAKES BRONZE MEDAL

SAGUENAY, Que. – Danielle Krzyszczyk (Winnipeg, Man.) scored the game-winning goal late in the second period to help Manitoba win bronze at the 2011 National Women’s Under-18 Championship with a 3-1 win over Team Atlantic on Sunday afternoon.

The bronze medal is the third for Manitoba at the tournament, joining third-place finishes in 2007 and 2008.

Manitoba opened the scoring just 4:11 in when Danielle Leslie (Winnipeg, Man.) tipped a shot from Rikki Meilleur (St. Adolphe, Man.) past Team Atlantic netminder Stefannie Moak (Middle Sackville, N.S.) for a 1-0 lead.

Moak was busy in the first period as Manitoba outshot Team Atlantic 15-5, but Leslie’s goal was the only one of the first 20 minutes.

Manitoba continued its offensive onslaught in period two, outshooting the easterners 15-2, but it took until the 17:35 mark to double its lead off the stick of Krzyszczyk, just 55 seconds before Catherine Tufts (Church Point, N.S.) made it a one-goal game again with Team Atlantic’s first marker.

Manitoba got the insurance goal it needed just 1:56 into the third period as Ashleigh Brykaliuk (Brandon, Man.) converted a rebound off a shot from Karissa Kirkup (Virden, Man.) to make it a 3-1 game.

Moak was strong once again for Team Atlantic, making 35 saves, but her team could manage only 11 shots against Manitoba goaltender Rachel Dyck (Winnipeg Beach, Man.) as it lost in the bronze medal for the second time in four tournaments.
