Q: Who is eligible to apply as a volunteer?
A: Minimum age for volunteers is 16 years of age, as of Sept. 1, 2016. Specific volunteer positions may require skills and/or abilities that can only be performed by an adult. In these instances, individuals over the age of 18 years will be placed in these positions. If you are under the age of 18 you must have parental consent.
Q: When is the application deadline?
A: We encourage you to sign up as soon as possible to avoid disappointment; the volunteer assignment process moves quickly!
Q: What is the time commitment required to volunteer?
A: A minimum volunteer commitment of four to six shifts, six hours in length each is expected. (Shift length will vary depending on role.) Please remember that this event runs over the holiday season, and depending on the position you may need to work Dec. 23-25 and Jan. 1.
Q: What volunteer positions are available?
A: Volunteer positions fall under different divisions, including Hockey Operations, Logistics, Game Presentation, Hospitality, Media, Hockey Development and Volunteer, and each division consists of a variety of unique volunteer positions. When completing your application you will be given the opportunity to rank your preferences for volunteer positions.
Q: What is the selection process?
A: Volunteer positions are assigned based on skills, experience and area of interest; requirements are specific to the volunteer position.
Q: When will I know if I have been selected as a volunteer?
A: You will receive an email confirmation from the host organizing committee informing you that you have been selected as a volunteer. You will be provided with instructions on how to accept your offer.
Q: Why is my volunteer offer only conditional?
A: Volunteer offers are conditional upon the successful completion of the security screening process. Some volunteer positions may require additional security screening depending on the requirements of the positions (e.g. Driver’s Abstract). Volunteers will be provided with the information required to complete the security screening(s) once they have accepted their volunteer offer.
Q: What if I applied to be a volunteer in the wrong city?
A: If you realize that you filled out an application for the wrong city, please contact the respective city ([email protected] or [email protected]) you wish to have applied to in order to ensure you application is being reviewed in the correct volunteer pool!
Q: What if I need to cancel my application or offer?
A: We understand that circumstances can change, so please ensure you contact your respective host organizing committee with this change as soon as possible.
Q: Is training mandatory?
A: All volunteers must attend the training session in order to ensure that they are best prepared for their volunteer duties. Volunteers will also receive online training material prior to the training sessions.
Q: Can I use my volunteer hours toward my secondary school community involvement requirement?
A: Students are able to use their completed volunteer hours towards their 40-hour community involvement graduation requirements. We encourage you to submit the Notification of Planned Community Involvement Activity form to your principal for approval to ensure that the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship volunteer hours qualify. Students will receive sign-off for volunteer hours using the Completion of Community Involvement Activities form.
Q: Will accommodations be provided for volunteers?
A: Accommodations will not be provided; volunteers are responsible for their own accommodations, if required. Visit the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship website for Montreal and Toronto tourism information.
Q: Will I be entitled to free or discounted tickets?
A: Tickets will not be offered free or at a discount with volunteer positions; however, your participation as a volunteer will provide you with a unique experience at this world-class event.
