1928 OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALISTS - UNIVERSITY of TORONTO ALUMNI |
||
1928 WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES For the third Olympics in a row Canada waltzed to a gold medal, this time thanks to the University of Toronto Grads. Such was the acknowledged superiority of Canada that it received a bye directly into the final round robin while ten European teams faced each other in a preliminary round for the three other berths. Sweden, Switzerland and Great Britain prevailed, but none was a match for the Grads, who won all games by an aggregate of 38-0. Netminders Joe Sullivan and Stuffy Mueller combined for the tournament-long shutout and the offense was led by future NHL star Dave Trottier. As always, the team traveled throughout Europe before and after the Olympics to promote hockey and the Canadian skill and speed. Unlike the first two tournaments, 1928 saw a rink with regulation-height boards and a size comparable to NHL arenas. Games were still three periods of 15 minutes each. |
