Team Wilson assured itself of a spot in Sunday’s final with a 5-2 win over Team Scherer in the morning game. Youngster Sarah Vaillancourt (Sherbrooke, QC) scored twice in the first period while Carly Haggard (Port Alberni, BC) added a single to give Team Wilson a commanding 3-0 lead through twenty minutes.
Kaley Hall (Calgary, AB) made it 3-1 but Team Wilson’s Marie-Claude Allard (Neufchâtel, QC) made it a three-goal deficit minutes later. Team Scherer got a second goal in the final frame, authored by Jennifer Botterill (Winnipeg, MB) but a late goal by Krista McArthur (Alliston, ON) confirmed the win with a goal late in the game, and Team Wilson had a 5-2 victory.
Team Scherer had only one positive option in the final game of the round robin. They needed a win to move on to the final. Anything less would mean an early wakeup on Sunday and a 3-on-3 game amongst themselves. Team St-Louis meanwhile needed either a win or a tie to avoid the early wakeup call, but they would have to do it without a key member, after Olympic gold medalist Dana Antal (Esterhazy, SK) suffered a broken leg in Thursday’s action.
Early on, the 1 493 fans on hand knew they were in for a great game. Both teams came out firing and early on Kim St-Pierre (Châteauguay, QC) was the story, handling numerous Team St-Louis chances during a ten-minute stretch in which Team St-Louis carried the play. Late in that first period, it was Winnipeg’s own, Sami Jo Small’s turn at the other end, making two great saves to keep the game tied at 0-0.
The defensive struggle continued in the second with a few good chances with Olympic teammates St-Pierre and Small holding strong at each end.
Team St-Louis broke the ice in the 3rd period, as Jayna Hefford (Kingston, ON) gained the puck down low, and set up Cherie Piper (Scarborough, ON) for a key goal. Team Scherer had a couple opportunities in the final minutes, two coming on a powerplay, but were unable to find the back of the net. Team St-Louis moves on the final on Sunday, where it will face Team Wilson, with a 1-0 win over Team Scherer.
