Team Canada Evaluation Camp CALGARY, AB – The National Women’s Team played their first of three exhibition games against the Calgary Midget AAA Royals on Monday night. The first period was fairly even, with the only goal scored by the Royals Dave McIvor for a 1-0 lead. Team Canada came out of the gate flying in the second, scoring a five-on-three power play goal by defensemen Delaney Collins-Pye, and then a second goal by Samantha Holmes which put the Nats up 2-1. But the Royals battled back when Bennett Royer buried one to tie things up at 2-2. Shortly after the tying goal, Dave McIvor scored his second of the night to give the Royals a 3-2 lead heading into the third period. The final frame had a great pace with back and forth action. Both goalies were solid between the pipes as they made numerous big saves in the third. John Shaw slid one past Sami Jo Small with just over six minutes remaining to ice the 4-2 victory for the Royals. Sami Jo Small played the entire 60 minutes for Team Canada while Royals goalie Justin Barnhart registered the win at the other end. The National Team has an early morning practice on Tuesday followed by some afternoon testing before taking a well deserved night to themselves. The next game is Wednesday night versus the Calgary Midget AAA Flames, face-off is at 7:30pm. |
