TEAM CANADA SIMULATES OLYMPIC SEMI FINAL AGAINST THE CALGARY FLAMES MIDGET AAA WITH A 2-2 TIE

CALGARY, AB – The last time these two teams met, the Flames opened the scoring 29 seconds into the first period. This time it was Canada who started the scoring right away as Hayley Wickenheiser scored from the slot a mere 24 seconds after the opening face off. Canada was able to double its lead four minutes later as Jayna Hefford snuck in behind the Flames defense and made no mistake as she beat the Flames starting goalie Chad Fox low to the stick side to put Canada up 2-0 despite being out shot 12-7.

Calgary’s Trevor Elias beat Canadian goaltender Sami Jo Small to get Calgary on the board five minutes into the second period and to bring the Flames to within one. But it turned out to be the only goal of the period as the Flames Chad Fox had an easy period as he only was forced to make two saves. Sami Jo Small was kept busy at the opposite end of the ice as she saved 13 of the 14 shots she faced.

It took until the 13:41 minute mark of the third before the Flames would tie the game at 2-2 on a goal by Chris Murphy. Despite three Canadian power play opportunities, they could not get one by Flames goaltender Chad Fox who made nine saves in the third, while Small had five for Canada.

In overtime, it was fairly even with both teams having chances to finish it. However the game ended in a 2-2 tie.

Team Canada will play their last game before Christmas on Monday as they host the Calgary Royals at Father David Bauer Arena at 8:30pm.
