TEAM CANADA ROUNDS OUT OLYMPIC SIMULATED SCHEDULE WITH A VICTORY OVER THE CALGARY ROYALS MIDGET AAA

CALGARY, AB – In a game that was to simulate the gold medal game of the Olympic schedule, Team Canada finished off with a 4-3 win.

Calgary opened the scoring 1:49 into the opening period when Calgary Royals forward Jack MacLellan scored an unassisted goal when he slipped one under Canadian goalie Charline Labonte during a goal mouth scramble. But Canada responded with a pair of goals, the first coming off the stick of defenseman Delaney Collins and the second on a breakaway by Hayley Wickenheiser to give Canada a 2-1 first period lead.

The Royals started off the second period the same as the first with another early goal, this time it was Travis Bradshaw who banged home a rebound from close range at 1:46 of the second period to knot things up at 2-2. Calgary jumped out to a 3-2 lead when John Shaw scored a short handed goal half way through the second. Hayley Wickenheiser replied for Canada three minutes later with her second of the night. Canada managed to kill off a 1:45 of 5-on-3 hockey late in the period to keep things tied at three heading into the third.

With only one goal scored in the third period, Canada’s Meghan Agosta netted the winner to give Canada a 4-3 win. Charline Labonte made 33 saves for the victory. Despite the 4-3 win, the two teams decided to go to a shoot out in order for Canada to get some practice. Katie Weatherston and Vicky Sunohara scored for Canada as Labonte shut the door in net for the Canadian 2-1 shoot out win.

Canada will now take a week of rest for the holidays and get back together in Winnipeg, MB on December 28th.
