Canada 7 - Calgary Northstars 1 Exhibition TEAM CANADA DEFEATS CALGARY NORTHSTARS 7-1 CALGARY, AB – Canada played its final game in Calgary on Wednesday night, as they defeated the Calgary Midget AAA Northstars for the second time this season. Despite Calgary opening the scoring at 17:32 on a wrap around goal by Daniel Iwanski, Canada responded with four unanswered goals of their own. Defenseman Carla MacLeod led the way with two goals, and adding singles were Jennifer Botterill and Hayley Wickenheiser. Canada out shot the Northstars 9-6 with Kim St-Pierre and Patrick Kingston each making five saves in the opening period. The second period was a lot slower offensively than the first, with Canada’s Vicky Sunohara scoring the lone goal on a backhand shot with 2:02 remaining in the period. Both teams switched goalies at 10:02 of the second, with Charline Labonte coming in after Kim St-Pierre had made eight saves allowing just one goal, and Chris Woo replaced Patrick Kingston in net for the Northstars who also made eight saves but allowed four goals. The third period belonged to Canada as they added two more goals to earn a 7-1 victory over the Calgary Northstars. Katie Weatherston and Caroline Ouellette added singles in the third period, but it was Carla MacLeod who scored two goals and added an assist for a three point night. Canada out shot Calgary 26-20, and Kim St-Pierre registered the win for the red and white, their eighth over Midget competition. The game finished with a shoot out, and Canadians Wickenheiser, Vaillancourt, and Ouellette all scored, while Charline Labonte did not allow a goal in net for Canada. Team Canada will travel to Edmonton first thing Thursday morning before finishing their midget schedule with games against Fort Saskatchewan and Leduc.
