TEAM CANADA FINISHES ROUND ROBIN WITH A PERFECT 3-0 RECORD AT THE TORINO ICE TOURNAMENT

TORINO, ITALY – Team Canada played the USA for the first time since a 6-0 victory on October 8th in Saskatoon, SK. Both teams had 2-0 records coming into the final round robin game, so the gold medal final between the two teams was already determined despite this games outcome.

Canada took an early lead sending the 4,000 plus fans into a frenzy when Hayley Wickenheiser scored an unassisted goal a mere 22 seconds after the opening face off. Canada got into a little penalty trouble when they were forced to kill of a 1:35 of 5-on-3 hockey, but Kim St-Pierre stood tall between the pipes making numerous big saves. Canadian defenseman Correne Bredin stepped up to join Danielle Goyette for a 2-on-1 which the blue-liner converted on after a nice feed from the veteran forward to put Canada up 2-0 at the end of one.

The second period was a penalty filled affair with nine minor penalties being called. Canada took advantage on the power play as they scored twice with the man advantage. Canada’s Caroline Ouellette scored from a bad angle as fired one towards the net from the goal line and US goalie Pam Dreyer could not control it on the glove side. Ouellette factored in on Canada’s fourth goal when she wired a shot from the point that was deflected by Jayna Hefford to give Canada a 4-0 lead after two periods. Vicky Sunohara received an assist on the play which is her 100th career international point. Kim St-Pierre continued to get a little help from the cross bar as the USA hit cross bar for a second time.

The only goal of the third period was a short handed marker that came two and a half minutes in when Dana Antal found the far side of the net to beat Pam Dreyer, and put Canada ahead 5-0. Kim St-Pierre registered her 18th career international shut-out in the victory.

Canada and the USA will meet again in the Tournament final on Saturday at 5pm local.
