TEAM CANADA WINS 9-5 IN HIGH SCORING AFFAIR

ST. ALBERT, AB – Canada played their first of a two game road trip as they faced the St. Albert Raiders Midget AAA team for the first time this season.

Canada opened the scoring just over three minutes into the game when rookie forward Meghan Agosta added her team leading 14th goal of the season after picking up a rebound and firing it past Nathan Gelinas who got the start in net for the Raiders. Captain Cassie Campbell increased Canada’s lead to 2-0 when the veteran forward followed her own rebound and scored at the six minute mark of the first. St. Albert scored a pair of goals with Derek Teske and Mickey Spencer having a hand in both goals, each had a goal and an assist for the hometown Raiders. Hayley Wickenheiser had Canada’s third goal when she wired a laser from the top of the circle that went in off the far post. Canada led 3-2 after a frantic first period in front of a capacity crowd at the Akinsdale Arena.

Meghan Agosta scored her second of the game less than a minute into the second to give Canada a 4-2 lead. Gina Kingsbury increased that to 5-2 when she fired one from outside the blue line on a penalty kill that found the top corner of the net. St. Albert closed the gap to two goals on a power play after Canada was penalized for too many men on the ice. With 2:11 seconds left in the period, Sarah Vaillancourt was awarded a penalty shot, but was unsuccessful as she tried to go high glove, narrowly missing the net. Kim St-Pierre made a number of stellar stops in net for Canada during the second period registering an enormous 15 saves.

Caroline Ouellette unloaded a cannon from the point on a 5-on-3 advantage for Team Canada just over a minute into the third giving Canada a 6-3 led. Meghan Agosta completed her hat trick two minutes later as she pounced on a rebound to give Canada a 7-3 led. The nets continued to fill as St. Albert added a pair including Scott Hudson’s second of the game. Jayne Hefford scored Canada’s eighth goal on a breakaway as she slipped the puck through Brent Morris’s legs. Caroline Ouellette added her second goal of the game with Canada enjoyed a final power play goal.

Canada ended up with a 9-5 victory in the highest scoring game Canada has been involved with this season. After the game, the team traveled down to Red Deer to face the Optimist Chiefs on Tuesday night.
