Canada 2 - Strathmore AAA Midget UFA Bisons 4 Exhibition STRATHMORE, AB – Team Canada opened the game with one of its best periods of hockey against Midget competition. Katie Weatherston snuck behind the Bisons defense for a breakaway at the half way point in the first period, but was unable to convert as the puck got away on her. Canada got on the board first on a beautiful three way passing play with Caroline Ouellette and Jayna Hefford setting up Meghan Agosta who tuck it home past the Bisons goalie. Sami Jo Small did not have a lot of action in the first, but did save all four shots fired her way, including a barrage of three consecutive shots right on the door step. Canada’s 1-0 lead did not hold up as the UFA Bisons scored two unanswered goals in just under two minutes. Bisons Jordan Kwas decided to keep the puck on a one-on-one and fired one past Sami Jo Small at the half way point on the second period. The second UFA goal came on a screened shot by Brandon Hoogenboom. Canada had its own opportunities as forwards Meghan Agosta and Gina Kingsbury had a two-on-one but could not find the back of the net. Canada was out shot 14-6 in the second period and trailed 2-1 heading into the third. UFA expanded its lead to 3-1 four minutes in to the period on a goal by Carson Rowat that trickled up over Sami Jo Small’s blocker. Team Canada responded to bring the deficit to within one when Gillian Apps left a drop pass for Hayley Wickenheiser who wired it home with twelve minute remaining. That was as close as Canada would get as the Bisons added an empty net goal to secure the 4-2 victory.
