LABONTE POSTS SHUTOUT AS CANADA MOVES TO 3-0

Calgary, AB – Charline Labonté (Boisbriand, QC/McGill, CIS) made 19 saves for the shutout and Jennifer Botterill (Winnipeg, MB/Mississauga, CWHL) and Kelly Bechard (Sedley, SK/Calgary, WWHL) each had a goal and two assists as Canada’s National Women’s Team beat Calgary Edge, a midget AAA boys team, 5-0 on Saturday afternoon at Father David Bauer Olympic Arena.

The National Women’s Team moved to 3-0 during its January evaluation camp. The camp, which concludes on Sunday, is one of the steps involved in Hockey Canada selecting the team that will play at the 2008 IIHF World Women’s Hockey Championship in April in Harbin, China.

Canada will play the Calgary Buffaloes of the Alberta Midget Hockey League on Sunday (Father David Bauer, 11 a.m.).

Botterill opened the scoring at 15:15 of the first period, when she jammed in a loose puck during a goal-mouth scramble. Canada made it 2-0 at 17:52, when Hayley Wickenheiser (Shaunavon, SK/Calgary, WWHL) grabbed a rebound in the slot and snapped a shot past Edge goaltender Alex Larsson-Wahlman.

After a scoreless second period, Canada struck for three goals in the third on the Edge’s Weston Joseph, starting with one by Gillian Apps (Unionville, ON/Brampton, CWHL) at 6:47. Apps one-timed a perfect pass from Bechard.

Wickenheiser scored her second of the game at 9:22 and Bechard concluded the scoring at the 19-minute mark.

Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, QC/Montreal, CWHL) had two assists.
