OUELLETE’S HAT TRICK HELPS NWT TO 6-1 WIN Edmonton, Alta. – More than 1,100 fans packed Edmonton’s Confederation Arena on Thursday night. to watch as Caroline Ouellette (Montreal, Que.) scored the last goal of the night – and secured a hat trick – to help the National Women’s Team to a huge 6-1 win over the South Side Athletic Club in Midget AAA action. Canada dominated the ice and improved its record to 7-3 in Midget Series play, with Ouellette answering SSAC’s lone goal and opening scoring for her team on a power play at 5:08 in the first period. From that point on there was no stopping the National Women’s Team, with both Sarah Vaillancourt (Sherbrooke, Que.) and Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, Que.) both putting away goals of their own before the period was up. The second was more evenly matched than the first, with both teams pushing the competition away from their respective nets and no goals put up on the scoreboard, with the score still 3-1 going into the intermission. Canadian netminder Shannon Szabados also did her part to keep the pucks away from the mesh, stopping 11 shots on the period including a nice SSAC breakaway chance. Just as she did in the first, Ouellette kicked off the third on a night note, pocketing a goal on assists from Hayley Wickenheiser (Shaunavon, Sask.) and Meaghan Mikkelson (St. Albert, Alta.) on another power play opportunity at 7:17 in the period. The Midget AAA squad picked up the pace and tried to catch up to the Canadian women as the game wound down, but it just wasn’t to be for SSAC. The last two goals for the National Women’s Team came within thirty seconds of each other, with Haley Irwin (Thunder Bay, Ont.) taking advantage of passes from Vaillancourt and Mikkelson at 18:53 and Ouellette topping off the score at 6-1 with assists going to Brianne Jenner (Oakville, Ont.) and Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, Ont.) at 18:23. Mikkelson also collected three points, while Szabados had a stellar night between the posts with 28 saves total, both in front of hometown crowds. The National Women’s Team continues its back-to-back games in Midget Series Action on Friday night with a game in Leduc. |
