2009-10 National Women's Team

Canada 4 - Medicine Hat 2

APPS CAPS CANADIAN WIN WITH THREE POINTS IN THIRD

MEDICINE HAT, Alta. – It was a slow start but a fast-paced finish for Canada’s National Women’s Team on Wednesday night, with Gillian Apps (Unionville, Ont.) snagging two goals and an assist in the third period to help Canada defeat the Medicine Hat Tigers 4-2.

The win moved Canada to a perfect 2-0 in the NWT Midget Series, and denied the Tigers a chance to grab two points in the Alberta Midget Hockey League standings.

After a penalty-ridden first period and a low-scoring second, in which Canada’s Jennifer Botterill (Winnipeg, Man.) and Medicine Hat’s Kyle Mohl traded goals, Jayna Hefford (Kingston, Ont.) got the Canadian momentum rolling in the third, with assists going to Caroline Ouellette (Montreal, Que.) and Apps.

Hefford and Ouellette joined Apps with big third periods, with Hefford, Canada’s captain for the night, adding an assist to her goal and Ouellette picking up two helpers.

The Tigers gave Canada all it could handle for much of the game, taking a 1-0 lead on Mohl’s goal midway through the second and pulling to within a goal at 3-2 after Adam Antkowiak scored with five minutes to go, but it was not to be for the Midget side.

Kim St-Pierre (Chateauguay, Que.) and Charline Labonté (Boisbriand, Que.) split time in Canada’s net, with Labonté earning the win.

Canada will travel to Lethbridge for a game against the Titans on Thursday night in another Midget Series contest, with the puck drop scheduled for 7:30 p.m. MT. Check hockeycanada.ca for updates.
