HEFFORD’S LATE GOAL NOT ENOUGH FOR CANADA LETHBRIDGE, Alta. – It made it close in the end, but Canada’s National Women’s Team has lost its first game of the season to Midget AAA competition, falling 4-3 to the Lethbridge Titans on Thursday night. Jayna Hefford (Kingston, Ont.) brought the puck from behind the net and lifted it past Lethbridge goaltender Brady Rouleau to pull Canada to within one at 4-3 with 73 seconds to go, but that would be all the offence the Canadians could muster. Following a scoreless first period, there was a flurry of goals in the second. Caroline Ouellette (Montreal, Que.) finished a great passing play on the power play at 9:23, connecting on a one-timer off a great pass by Hefford. Lethbridge came right back with two goals in just over five minutes to take a 2-1 lead. But, just before the end of the period, Cherie Piper (Scarborough, Ont.) pulled the puck from her forehand to backhand, before sliding the puck across to Jennifer Botterill (Winnipeg, Man.), who scored on another one-timer. Shannon Szabados (Edmonton, Alta.) and Charline Labonté (Boisbriand, Que.) split time in Canada’s net. |
