IRWIN SCORES PAIR TO LEAD CANADA TO WIN OVER STORM GRANDE PRAIRIE, Alta. – Canada’s National Women’s Team dominated the score sheet and the ice Tuesday night, defeating the hometown Storm 5-1 in NWT Midget Series action. Canada led 2-0 after one period and 3-0 after two en route to its fourth win in five tries against Alberta Midget Hockey League competition, with two more games coming on Canada’s three-games-in-three-nights road trip. Haley Irwin (Thunder Bay, Ont.) got the ball rolling for Canada, putting one past Storm goaltender CJ Wass less than six minutes into the game, finishing off a passing play that included Delaney Collins (Pilot Mound, Man.) and Colleen Sostorics (Kennedy, Sask.). After Jayna Hefford (Kingston, Ont.) made it 2-0 late in the opening frame – keeping up her hot streak after a hat trick against the Calgary Buffaloes a week ago – Irwin struck again early in the second period, pushing Canada’s advantage to 3-0. Canada got offensive contributions from a number of players, as 12 players finished with at least a point. Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, Ont.) and Brianne Jenner (Oakville, Ont.) joined Irwin and Hefford on the scoresheet, while Hefford also picked up an assist to join Irwin as the only Canadian skaters with multiple-point outings. Corey Wamsteeker was the only player to score a goal for Grand Prairie, converting a pass from Jordan Clark, sending the crowd of more than 1,900 at the Crystal Centre into a frenzy midway through the third period. But that was to be the only celebration for the Storm, who were forced to settle for second best in their home rink. Canada continues its tour of northern Alberta on Wednesday night, taking on the Edmonton K of C Pats at Clareview Arena (7:45 p.m. MT) before wrapping up its trip on Thursday at the Strathmore Family Centre when it faces the UFA Bisons (6:45 p.m. MT). |
