NATIONAL WOMEN’S TEAM BLANKED BY BISONS STRATHMORE, Alta. – A hectic schedule took its toll on the National Women’s Team on Thursday night as it suffered a 6-0 defeat at the hands of the UFA Bisons, dropping Canada to 5-2 in NWT Midget Series action. The game was Canada’s third in as many nights, including a two-day northern road trip to Grand Prairie and Edmonton that covered more than 1,400 kilometres, all by bus. It was a measure of revenge for the Bisons, who lost 6-5to Canada in the Icebreaker Tournament in late September. Both teams came out with chances in the opening 20 minutes, and despite the Bisons holding a 10-8 advantage in shots on goal, the game entered the first intermission scoreless. It was UFA who hit the scoreboard first in the middle frame, scoring shorthanded just 4:02 into the period off the stick of Levi Bews. Keith Csizmadia scored at 4-on-4 and Mason Burr added a power play marker for the Bisons, sending them to the dressing room up 3-0 after two periods, despite not scoring at 5-on-5. The Canadians, on the ice for the third time in 72 hours, did well to manage 34 shots on the UFA goal, but Bisons netminder George Merik was up to the task, turning aside everything he faced to record the shutout. Csizmadia, Cody Fowlie and Michael Winther added third period goals on Canadian netminders Kim St-Pierre (Chateauguay, Que.) and Charline Labonté (Boisbriand, Que.), who combined to stop 32 of the 38 shots directed their way. The National Women’s Team continues NWT Midget Series play on Tuesday night, Oct. 27, when it faces the Calgary Flames at Father David Bauer Olympic Arena in Calgary (7:30 p.m. MT). That will be Canada’s final game before departing for Europe, where they’ll face Finland, Sweden and the United States at the 2009 4 Nations Cup, beginning Nov. 3. |
