CANADA COMES UP SHORT IN WOMEN’S UNDER-18 OPENER

LAKE PLACID, NY – They worked hard and they created scoring chances. But in the end, Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team came out on the wrong end of the final score.

Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, ON/Ottawa, PWHL) scored the lone goal early in the third period, but by that time Canada found itself in a 3-0 hole on the way to a 4-1 loss to the USA’s Women’s Under-18 Select Team on Wednesday night.

The Canadians were neck-and-neck with the Americans in the opening 20 minutes – the shots were even at 8-8 – but goals from Meghan Bozek and Brianna Decker gave the USA a 2-0 lead heading to the intermission.

Canada came out with the momentum in period number two, outshooting the Americans 11-5, but still could not get a puck past USA goaltender Alex Rigsby, who was a perfect 19-for-19 in the first two periods.

Taylor Wasylk added the Americans’ third goal with just under eight minutes to go in the period, beating Canadian netminder Cassie Seguin (Ingleside, ON/Ottawa, PWHL), who had replaced starter Roxanne Douville (Beloeil, QC/Richelieu, QC MBB) at the midway point of the game.

The Canadians continued to pressure the USA in the third period, firing 17 shots on Rigsby compared to just seven by the Americans on Seguin, but only Rattray could find the back of the net, and her goal was followed 62 seconds later by a goal from Decker, rounding out the scoring.

Kayleigh Fratkin (Burnaby, BC/Burnaby, BC MAAA) earned the lone assist on Rattray’s goal.

The game marked the first on international soil for Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team. They faced the USA in a three-game series in Ottawa, ON last August, winning all three games, and hosted the first-ever IIHF World Women’s Under-18 Championship in Calgary in January, falling to the Americans in the gold medal game.

The USA has six players from their gold medal-winning team back, while the Canadians have only three – captain Brianne Jenner (Oakville, ON/Stoney Creek, PWHL) and alternates Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, QC/Montreal, CWHL) and Laura Fortino (Hamilton, ON/Stoney Creek, PWHL).

The two teams will return to the ice at the Lake Placid Olympic Center for the second game of the three-game series on Friday night, with puck drop set for 7 p.m. EDT.
