PENALTY KILLING, THIRD-PERIOD OUTBURST LEADS CANADA RED TO WIN IN WOMEN’S U18 OPENER It wasn’t pretty, but Canada Red is the first team into the win column after a 5-2 win over Canada White on Monday night in the opening game at the National Women’s Under-18 Team selection camp in Calgary. Canada Red survived five consecutive Canada White powerplays in the opening 20 minutes and used a three-goal third period burst to turn a tight 2-1 game into a 5-1 runaway en route to victory. Nicole Paniccia (Oakville, ON) and Jenesica Drinkwater (Brantford, ON) stood tall in the Canada Red goal, turning aside 26 of the 28 shots they faced, many coming with Canada White holding the man advantage. With Canada Red killing its third minor penalty of the first period, Brianne Jenner (Oakville, ON) scored against the flow of play, stepping over the blueline and firing a low slap shot that eluded Canada White goaltender Tara Lacquette (Mallard, MB). Casandra Langan (Chatham, ON) built on the lead just 60 seconds later, grabbing a loose puck off a shot from Jillian Saulnier (Halifax, NS) and beating Lacquette for a 2-0 advantage. Paniccia shut the door on Canada White in her 30 minutes of play, not allowing a goal, but Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, ON) welcomed Drinkwater to the game by stripping a Canada Red defenseman at the blueline and snapping a shot home to cut the lead to one at 2-1 heading to the second intermission. With the opposition holding the momentum heading to the final frame it was Canada Red who came out with the jump, as Isabel Ménard (Ottawa, ON) and Jessica Campbell (Melville, SK) scored just 1:19 apart early in the frame to turn a one-goal lead into a three-goal advantage, and Kathleen McDonald (Kamloops, BC) beat Canada White netminder Cassie Seguin (Ingleside, ON) to make it 5-1 just past the midway mark of the period. Jenna McParland (Schreiber, ON) rounded out the scoring with a beautiful backhand over the shoulder of Drinkwater, but it was too little, too late as Canada White fell despite holding a 28-24 advantage in shots on goal, and a 9-5 powerplay advantage. Jenner finished with a goal and two assists for Canada Red, while Rattray added a helper to go along with her second-period goal. Canada White returns to the ice at Father David Bauer Arena on Tuesday night to face Japan at 7:00 p.m. MT, while Canada Red has Tuesday off before facing the Japanese on Wednesday, also a 7:00 p.m. MT puck drop. |
