FRYKAS’ FAST START FUELS WHITE, POULIN GETS OVERTIME WINNER IN 3-2 WIN It took 10 seconds more than they had planned, but Canada White is into the win column at the National Women’s Under-18 Team selection camp in Calgary. Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, QC) scored just 10 seconds after the opening face-off in overtime, giving Canada White (1-1) a 3-2 win over Japan (0-1) on Tuesday night, their first win of the week-long camp. Poulin and linemate Breann Frykas (East St. Paul, MB) provided all the offense for Canada White, while Tara Lacquette (Mallard, MB) made 20 saves, nine coming in the final 20 minutes with the Japanese pressing for the equalizer. Wearing the captain’s ‘C’ for Canada White, Frykas led by example early on, picking a pair of goals before the game was five minutes old. She was credited with the game’s opening goal, as an errant pass from a Japanese defender found its way past netminder Azusa Nakaoku just 1:03 after the opening face-off, and added another 3:44 later, taking a pass from Poulin and extending the Canada White lead to two. But the Canada White offense was snake bit outside of Frykas’ early markers, failing to convert on the chances they had, and seeing many golden opportunities turned away by the 5-foot-2, 130-pound Nakaoku, who kept Japan in the game despite a 31-22 deficit in shots on goal. Japan got on the board early in the second period, as Emi Nonaka caused a turnover at the Canada White blueline and sprung Tomomi Iwahara, who beat Lacquette on the forehand to make it 2-1. Lacquette and Nakaoku dueled from that point on, both denying the opposition on numerous occasions as the game got down to its final minutes still at 2-1 for Canada White. With Nakaoku on the bench in favour of an extra attacker with under a minute to go, the puck found its way to the side of the net and onto the stick of Tomoko Sakagami, who pulled Japan even with just 56.5 seconds left on the clock. That set the stage for Poulin’s heroics, as she and Frykas combined for an early end to the extra frame, sending Canada White into their off day of Wednesday on a high note. Japan returns to the ice at Father David Bauer Arena on Wednesday, when face Canada Red (1-0) at 7:00 p.m. MT. |
