LANGAN GETS OVERTIME WINNER AS CANADA RED SCORES WIN OVER CANADA WHITE On Thursday night, Casandra Langan (Chatham, ON) got the opportunity to wear the captain’s ‘C’ for Canada Red as it looked to remain perfect and book a spot in Sunday’s championship game at the National Women’s Under-18 Team selection camp. She didn’t disappoint. Langan scored the game-winning goal 2:30 into overtime as Canada Red fought back from a late 2-1 deficit to score a 3-2 win over Canada White, moving it to 3-0 at the week-long camp and assuring itself a spot in the final game. Brianne Jenner (Oakville, ON) tied the game for Canada Red with just 3:21 to go, while Ally Tarr (London, ON) picked up the other goal for the victors. Brigette Lacquette (Mallard, MB) pitched in with a pair of assists for Canada Red, both coming with her sister Tara in goal for Canada White. Nearing the end of a fast-moving first period, it was Canada Red who got on the board first, as Tarr picked up the rebound off a blocked shot and beat Canada White netminder Cassie Seguin (Ingleside, ON), who allowed just the one goal on 13 shots in her 30 minutes of work. After being shut down by goaltender Roxanne Douville (Beloeil, QC) through the first half of the game, it took just 13 seconds for Canada White to get to her replacement as Jessica Wong (Baddeck, NS) beat Jenesica Drinkwater (Brantford, ON) moments after the goaltending change was made to pull her team even. Canada White grabbed their first lead on a powerplay in the dying seconds of the middle frame, as Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, QC) had her centering pass deflect off Drinkwater and in for a 2-1 lead heading to the intermission. Candice Styles (Orangeville, ON) had a chance to put the game away for Canada White when she was awarded a penalty shot with just over six minutes left on the clock, but her backhand slid just wide of the post, setting up Jenner’s game-tying marker less than three minutes later. After Brittany Phillips tried to dance around a Canada White defender but was stopped, the loose puck found its way onto the stick of Jenner, who snapped the puck past Lacquette. Langan’s game winner was almost a carbon copy of Jenner’s goal, although this time it was Jenner who started the rush and Langan who was the recipient of the loose puck, clinching Canada Red’s third win in as many tries at camp. Canada Red rides its three-game winning streak into an off day on Friday, while Canada White returns to the ice at Father David Bauer Arena at 7:00 p.m. to face Japan, needing a win to ensure an all-Canadian rematch on Sunday. |
