CONNERY SCORES BREAKAWAY WINNER TO HELP CANADA TOP UNITED STATES 3-2

ROCKLAND, Ont. - Nicole Connery (New Market, Ont.) scored the game-winning goal on a breakaway with 1:15 left in the third period, as Canada's National Women’s Under-18 Team edged the United States 3-2 on Friday night, in Game 2 of a three-game series.

Rebecca Kohler (St. Thomas, Ont.) tied the game at 2-2 for Canada just over a minute into the third period, while Erin Ambrose (Keswick, Ont.) opened scoring in the second.

“I was just looking for that open space,” Connery said. “I was trying to draw (American goalie Megan Miller) a bit to the right so she'd drop her right shoulder and I could shoot top right.”

Alex Carpenter and Anne Pankowski supplied the offence for the United States.

Canada lost the first game of the three-game exhibition series 3-2 on Thursday. Connery said after Friday's win that there was a different feeling amongst the Canadians for the second game.

“The energy was huge,” Connery said. “The dressing room, we were getting it pumped in there.”

Canadian assistant coach Jim Fetter (Waterloo, Ont.) agreed with Connery's assessment.

“We just skated,” Fetter said. “We moved our feet all game and over time we just wore them down. Same as yesterday, we continued to get better as the game went on and kept the pressure on.”

The third and final game of the exhibition series is Sunday. Fetter hopes the Canadians can channel their emotions into productive energy in the rubber match.

“We're on an emotional high and I think it's great that we can take the day off and regroup, get our emotions back,” said Fetter. “Hopefully, we can finish it on Sunday.”

On the ice, Connery knows what she and her teammates need to do to win the final game of the exhibition action.

“We have to get those shots off early, crash the net really hard,” Connery said. “We've been trying to work on that every period, every shift. We're going to keep doing that and just keep playing our game.”
