2013-14 National Women's Under-18 Team

Red - White

KRZYSZCZYK SCORES SHORTHANDED TO PACE RED TO 3-1 WIN OVER WHITE

ROCKLAND, Ont. – When Danielle Krzyszczyk (Winnipeg, Man./St. Mary’s Academy, NAPHA) got a hold of the puck in the offensive zone midway through the second period Thursday, there was no stopping her from putting the puck in the White’s net for Red’s second goal of the game – even if her team was killing a penalty.

The quick-handed forward notched the beautiful shorthanded marker at 10:20 in the second, keeping momentum rolling in Red’s favour during the second of three intrasquad games at Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team selection camp, currently being held in Rockland.

But it was her teammate Victoria Bach (Milton, Ont./Mississauga, PWHL) who opened the scoring, snagging an assist from Kelly Mariani (Mississauga, Ont./Mississauga, PWHL) to put Red on the board five minutes into the opening frame.

Despite two penalties in the first and another in the second, and some strong shots and close chances from White’s power-play unit, Red was able to maintain its 2-1 lead after 40 minutes of solid back-and-forth play on the ice.

White came out even more determined in the third, and Hannah Miller (Vancouver, B.C./Okanagan Hockey Academy, PWHL) was able to get her team on the scoresheet just 35 seconds into the final frame, with help from Nadine Edney (Mississauga, Ont./Mississauga, PWHL), to narrow the gap to 2-1, still in favour of Red.

The fast-paced action continued up and down the rink, but Red was able to put another in the net with three minutes left in the game, when Jessica Healey (Edmonton, Alta./Edmonton, AMMFHL) fed Taylor Murphy (Corbeil, Ont./North Bay, LLFHL), who made it 3-1 over White.

With only a couple of minutes remaining on the clock, White called a time-out and pulled Amelia Boughn (Toronto, Ont./Mississauga, PWHL) from the net. But despite the extra attacker, and what was Red’s fourth penalty of the period, called as the final seconds wound down on the clock, White was unable to find the back of the net again before the final whistle blew.

Red skated away with a win in what was the second of three games at this week’s National Women’s Under-18 Team selection camp. Boughn made 24 saves on the night, while Red’s Marlene Boissonnault (Dundee, N.B./Rothesay Netherwood School, NAPHA) stopped 28 shots on the night.

Red and White are back on the ice Saturday (2 p.m. ET) at the Canadian International Hockey Academy for the third and final intrasquad game. Follow live game updates at www.twitter.com/hc_women.
