Canada wins Air Canada Cup Opener
Canada’s National Women’s Under 22 Team defeated Team Finland Under 20 by a score of 8-3 in the opening game of the Air Canada Cup in Duisburg, Germany on Thursday night.
Katie Weatherston of Thunder Bay, ON and Meaghan Mikkelson of St. Albert, AB scored two goals each to lead Canada’s attack. Following a scoreless first period, Team Canada exploded for five goals in the second period. In addition to Weatherston’s pair and a single from Mikkelson, Kaley Hall of Calgary, AB and Ashley Riggs of Pickering, ON contributed to the commanding Canadian lead at the end of the second.
Finland got on the scoreboard at the 4:05 mark of the third, spoling Brittony Chartier’s shutout bid. The teams continued to trade goals for the remainder of the period with Mikkelson’s second and Krista McArthur (Alliston, ON) and Noemie Marin (Acton Vale, AC) rounding out the Canadian scoring. Finland’s final goal of the night was a power play marker on a two man advantage in the last minute of the game. Team Canada outshot Finland 46 -25.
The next action for the Team Canada will come on Friday at 4:30pm German time as they take on Switzerland in their second round robin game at the Air Canada Cup.
