CANADA DROPS OPENER OF THREE-GAME EXHIBITION SERIES

Canada opened up their three-game exhibition series against the USA in Ottawa on Thursday night, dropping a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime decision.

The Canadians looked good early, with Valerie Chouinard (Matane, QC) opening the scoring 1:39 into the game, firing the puck through the legs of American goaltender Jesse Vetter. Dominique Thibault (L’Orignal, ON) and Sabrina Harbec (Montreal, QC) picked up the assists on Chouinard’s goal.

The second period was scoreless, but not uneventful. Seventeen penalties were called in the period, but neither team could capitalize with the man advantage.

The Americans finally got on the scoreboard early in period three, as Erika Lawler connected on the power play at 4:37, snapping the puck past Canadian goaltender Shannon Szabados (Edmonton, AB).

The Canadians found themselves in penalty trouble in the overtime, going two men down in the opening 1:40. The Americans capitalized, with Sarah Parsons finding the net two minutes into the extra frame, giving the Americans the 2-1 win.

Special teams were the story of the game, as the Americans went 2/18 with the powerplay, while the Canadians were 0/12. The Canadians were outshot 41-21.
