BIG LINE HELPS CANADA TO BIG WIN IN 2008 EUROPEAN AIR CANADA CUP OPENER RAVENSBURG, Germany – After two days in Germany, Canada’s National Women’s Under-22 Team finally took to the ice on Thursday, taking on Russia in their opening game at the 2008 European Air Canada Cup, the first time Canada’s U22s and Russia had ever met. Dominique Thibault (L’Orignal, ON/University of Connecticut, HE) opened the scoring for Canada just 6:36 after the opening face-off, converting a centring pass from Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, ON/University of New Hampshire, HE). Canadian captain Valerie Chouinard (Matane, QC/Mercyhurst College, CHA) upped the lead to 2-0 less than two minutes later, with assists going to Meghan Agosta (Ruthven, ON/Mercyhurst College, CHA) and Rebecca Johnston (Sudbury, ON/Cornell University, ECAC) – the start of a big night for that trio. Despite outshooting the Russians 22-5 in the opening 20 minutes, the Canadians were unable to get another puck past netminder Anna Prugova. But Canada came out firing in the middle frame, and goals from Agosta, Laura Fridfinnson (Arborg, MB/University of Minnesota-Duluth, WCHA) and Amanda Shaw (St. Thomas, ON/Boston University, HE) within a span of 1:06 spelled the end of Prugova. Valentina Ostovlianchik fared no better in the Russian goal, as Agosta added her second of the period shortly after the change on a Canadian powerplay, converting the rebound of an Andrea Bevan (Collingwood, ON/Wilfrid Laurier University, CIS) point shot. Emmanuelle Blais (Montreal, QC/University of Minnesota-Duluth, WCHA) – with assists going to Mallory Deluce (London, ON/University of Wisconsin, WCHA) and Jocelyne Larocque (Ste. Anne, MB/University of Minnesota-Duluth, WCHA) – and Haley Irwin, with an unassisted effort, rounded out the scoring in the second period, sending Canada to the intermission with an 8-0 lead. The Agosta-Chouinard-Johnston line continued to light up the scoreboard early in the third period, as Johnston tipped home a pass from Agosta three minutes into the period and Agosta completed her hat trick just 16 seconds later off a feed from Chouinard as the Canadian lead grew to double digits. Deluce picked up her first goal in a Canadian jersey four-and-a-half minutes into the period, with Courtney Birchard (Mississauga, ON/University of New Hampshire, HE) getting her first international point on the assist to make it 11-0 before the Russians broke the shutout bid of Laura Hosier (Sharon, ON/Mercyhurst College, CHA) with a powerplay goal. Fridfinnson and Irwin rounded out the scoring for Canada, with Russian captain Ekaterina Smolentseva potting her second of the period to close out the game. Canada held a 61-17 advantage in shots on goal in the win, and will look to carry that momentum into Friday’s game with Germany, with a close-to-capacity pro-German crowd expected. |
