CANADA’S NATIONAL WOMEN’S UNDER-22/DEVELOPMENT TEAM BLANKS SLOVAKIA 8-0 IN PRE-MECO CUP EXHIBITION

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia - Brittany Haverstock (Hammonds Plains, N.S./University of Wisconsin, WCHA) and Catherine White (Brampton, Ont./Cornell University, ECAC) scored two goals apiece as Canada's National Women’s Under-22/Development Team shut out Slovakia 8-0 in an exhibition game Friday evening.

Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, Ont./Clarkson University, ECAC) added a goal and an assist, while Isabel Menard (Ottawa, Ont./Boston University, Hockey East), Laura McIntosh (Waterloo, Ont./Ohio State University, WCHA) and Cassandra Poudrier (Lachenaie, Que./Dawson College, Collégial AA) also scored in a tune-up for next week's Meco Cup in Germany.

The Canadians scored five goals in the first period en route to the easy win.

“It was nice to get the jitters out the first 20 minutes of the game,” Haverstock said. “We came out really strong in the first period and I think that really helped us with the flow of the rest of the game.

“Overall, it was a really good game, and good first game to have.”

Canada plays Slovakia again mid-day Saturday in Bratislava. Head coach Laura Schuler (Scarborough, Ont./University of Minnesota Duluth, WCHA) said the two-game exhibition series is important, since the players hadn't practised together since training camp this past August in Rockland, Ont.

“We've done a lot in only a day and a half here, of going over some of our systems and so forth,'' Schuler said. “I felt like overall, having given them so much, that they did a pretty good job of executing what we were asking them to do.”

Canada begins defence of its title Tuesday against host country Germany at Arena Sonthofen. The Meco Cup’s other participating teams are Finland, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland.
