CANADA'S WOMEN'S UNDER-22 HOCKEY TEAM FALLS 4-1 TO UNITED STATES IN SERIES OPENER

CALGARY – Canada's women's under-22 hockey team's 13-game streak without a regulation time loss against the United States ended with a 4-1 defeat Thursday.

The Americans notched their first 60-minute win against Canada since 2004 in Game 1 of a three-game exhibition series.

After falling behind 2-0 on goals from Rachel Ramsey and Paige Savage, forward Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ont./Quinnipiac University, ECAC) took a pass from linemate Jessica Campbell (Melville, Sask./Cornell University, ECAC) and scored late in the second period as Canada held the momentum going into the intermission.

But the Canadians took a slew of penalties in the third period and the Americans added two more goals, from Kelley Steadman and Jocelyne Lamoureux, to pull away.

Canada took four straight trips to the penalty box, and Lamoureux’s fourth goal came on the power play.

Coach Lisa Jordan was disappointed with her team's poor performance in the third period, especially considering the late flurry in the second.

“I think we would have liked to have not gone into the room after the second,” said Jordan. “In the third, we were expecting to give a little more push back but it didn't happen.

“We need to stay out of the box and be more disciplined, and just be a bigger threat offensively.”

The Americans outshot Canada 30-17, and 10-3 in the third.

Goaltender Ann-Renée Desbiens (La Malbaie, Que./Beauport, LDHAAEQ) made 26 saves in the losing cause, while Alex Rigsby turned aside 16 shots for the victory.

“Our execution level was average and it's going to be better,” Jordan said.
