CANADA'S WOMEN'S UNDER-22 HOCKEY TEAM FALLS 4-2 FOR SECOND STRAIGHT LOSS TO U.S.

CALGARY – Canada's women's under-22 hockey team put in a better performance Friday, but still came up short in a 4-2 loss to the United States.

Canada, which opened a three-game exhibition set against the U.S. with a 4-1 loss on Thursday, led twice before allowing three second-period goals.

Coach Lisa Jordan said the turning point came when Canada took a 2-1 lead in the second period, only to concede the equalizer 13 seconds later.

“The momentum there was a big thing, we got the go-ahead goal but we gave it right back,” said Jordan.

The Americans added two more before the period was up to take the lead for good.

Canada outshot the U.S. 23-20, while goalie Emerance Maschmeyer (Bruderheim, Alta./Lloydminster, AJHL) made 16 saves in the losing effort.

Canada opened the scoring in the first period through forward Kelly Terry (Whitby, Ont./University of Minnesota, WCHA), with forward Shelby Bram (Ste. Anne, Man./Mercyhurst College, CHA) and defender Shannon Doyle (Welland, Ont./Colgate University, ECAC) getting the assists.

After the Americans tied it before the intermission, forward Mélodie Daoust (Valleyfield, Que./McGill University, CIS) put Canada ahead again with a power play goal in the second after a scramble behind the American net.

Despite the loss, Jordan was much happier with Game 2.

“I'm proud of the performance overall,” she said. “We had a different team out there tonight, our performance was very strong, we had a lot better team system offensively.”
