Jennifer Botterill set things in motion for Canada putting a rebound into an open net past Russian goaltender Irina Gachennikova at 0:52. Dana Antal added a goal on a powerplay as Canada took a 2-0 lead through 20 minutes of play.

Danielle Goyette and Nancy Drolet added to Canada's lead in the second frame before Oksana Teriakova put Russia on the board with the first goal Canada has allowed so far at the Worlds. Jayna Hefford added a goal for Canada to make the score 5-1 through forty minutes.
