Pre-World Championship Game/
Charles V. Keating Millenium Centre Antigonish, NS/ N.-É. March 28, 2004 |
Canada’s National Women’s Team skated to a 9-1 win over Sweden on Sunday afternoon, at a sold out Millenium Centre, on the campus of St. Francis Xavier University. Cassie Campbell opened the scoring at 2:30, spinning around and putting a backhand under Swedish netminder Kim Martin. Canada pressed on with a flurry of shots but Martin was solid and held to Canada to the one goal in the first. Sweden managed only five shots on Canadian goaltender Kim St-Pierre, of which three came in the final stages of the first frame during a powerplay. Canada’s powerplay accounted for a second goal at 7:56 of the middle frame, as Jayna Hefford pushed a rebound past Martin. At 15:25, Canada made it 3-0. Just as a powerplay ended, Canada’s pressure led to Kelly Béchard beating Martin. St-Pierre gave way to Sami Jo Small in net for Canada after the second period. St-Pierre faced a total of nine shots over 40 minutes of play. Caroline Ouellette, Becky Kellar, Hefford, with her second, Goyette and Piper added goals in the third, as Canada humbled Sweden 9-1. Gunilla Andersson ruined the Canadian shutout with a powerplay goal in the third. Team Canada headed to Halifax following the game and opens the World Championship against China on Tuesday, March 30th. Game Notes |
