WICKENHEISER HAS NATURAL HAT TRICK IN CANADA’S WIN

HARBIN, CHINA – Hayley Wickenheiser (Shaunavon, SK/Calgary, WWHL) had three goals in the first period – one at even strength, one on the power play and one shorthanded – as Canada downed Sweden 6-1 in exhibition play on Wednesday.

The game was Canada’s last tuneup prior to the 2008 IIHF World Women’s Championship, which starts on Friday. Canada opens the event against Russia.

Colleen Sostorics (Kennedy, SK/Calgary, WWHL) opened the scoring at 3:39 of the first period. Less than a minute later, Wickenheiser found an opening and streaked down the right side, beating Kim Martin with a snap shot to the far side.

Wickenheiser’s second of the game came on the power play at 15:13 and she completed the natural hat trick with a shorthanded goal at 18:41.

Cherie Piper (Scarborough, ON/Mississauga, CWHL) had a goal and three assists for Canada. Piper scored in the third period to make it 5-1 and Jennifer Botterill (Winnipeg, MB/Mississauga, CWHL) concluded the scoring when she finished a nice play set up by Piper and Jayna Hefford (Kingston, ON/Brampton, CWHL).

Elin Holmlov scored Sweden’s lone goal. Kim St-Pierre (Chateauguay, QC/Montreal, CWHL) started the game in net for Canada, with Charline Labonte (Boisbriand, QC/McGill, CIS) coming in at the 10:15 mark of the second period. Canada outshot Sweden 50-15.

Team Canada will practise on Thursday in preparation for its first game of the World Women’s Championship.
