TETACHUK GETS SHUTOUT, HURRICANES WIN TELUS CUP BRONZE

CAROLINA KEEN

SUDBURY, Ont. – Carl Tetachuk turned in a 20-save shutout and Kadyn Chabot scored twice, leading the Lethbridge Hurricanes to a 4-0 win over the Toronto Young Nationals in the bronze medal game Sunday at the 2018 TELUS Cup.

The Hurricanes bounced back from a heartbreaking overtime loss to Magog in the semifinals to win a medal in their first-ever trip to Canada’s National Midget Championship.

Carson Dyck added a goal and two assists for Lethbridge, tournament MVP Ronan Seeley had one of each, and Zack Stringer chipped in three helpers to the win.

The Hurricanes took the lead less than eight minutes in; a backhand feed from Stringer to Chabot set up a power-play goal for all the offence the Pacific champions would need.

Dyck doubled the advantage on a five-on-three in the second period, banking his centering pass in off the skate of Noah Arsenault, and Chabot added his second of the game in the final minute of the middle frame to put Lethbridge in control after two.

Seeley hammered a slap shot past Elliott Tang just 52 seconds into the third period, and the only thing left to decide was if Tetachuk would finish the shutout.

The netminder made 12 saves in the first period, three in the second and five in the third to post the first bronze medal game shutout in the 45-year history of the national championship, and the first shutout in any medal game since Red Deer blanked Ottawa for gold in 2013.
