Game Story

CANTONNIERS WIN AGAIN, DOWN BUFFALOES AT TELUS CUP

JASON LA ROSE

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Justin Robidas scored a goal and set up two others, and the Cantonniers de Magog hung on in the third period to earn a 3-2 win over the Calgary Buffaloes in the opening game of the day Wednesday at the 2019 TELUS Cup.

The Cantonniers improved to 3-0 with the victory; they are just the third Quebec team since 2005 to open with three-consecutive wins, joining Collège Esther-Blondin in 2012 and Lac St-Louis in 2016.

Jacob Dion and Jérémy Lapointe had the other goals for Magog, and Olivier Adam made 32 saves to record his third win in as many days between the pipes.

Calgary needed only 2:09 to open the scoring when Joel Homersham let go a quick wrist shot off the right wing that found room past Adam on the short side, but Dion converted on a Magog power play just over three minutes later to tie the game.

The Cantonniers took the lead for good with a pair of similar-looking goals in the second period.

Robidas got the first at 6:48, taking a long bank pass from Isaac Belliveau and beating Buffaloes netminder Jonah Chambers low to the stick side, and Lapointe took an off-the-boards feed from Robidas before going far-side for the eventual game-winner late in the middle frame.

The Pacific Region champions got back within one in the first minute of the third period off the stick of Dylan Witzke, who hammered a slap shot past Adam on the power play, but they would get no closer.

Adam was at his best in the final frame, making 14 stops to get the Cantonniers across the finish line.

Chambers, who saw his first game action since a 4-1 regular-season win over Grande Prairie on Feb. 9, turned aside 25 of 28.

Magog goes for a fourth-consecutive win Thursday afternoon against the Toronto Young Nationals (4 p.m. ET), right after the Buffaloes try to end their two-game skid against the Tisdale Trojans (12 p.m. ET).
