BOTTERILL REACHES MILESTONE AS CANADA BEATS SWEDEN
MORA, SWEDEN – Jennifer Botterill (Winnipeg, MB/Mississauga, CWHL) scored her 49th and 50th-career goals as
Canada beat Sweden 8-0 in exhibition action on Tuesday, as the teams prepared for the start of the 4 Nations
Cup.
Botterill, playing in her 145th game for Canada’s National Women’s Team, scored early in the first period,
when she snapped a shot from the slot past Sweden’s starting goaltender, Sara Grahn.
Botterill reached the 50-goal milestone at 12:40 of the third period, when she finished a play set up by
Caroline Ouellette (Montreal, QC/Minnesota, WWHL) and Becky Kellar (Hagersville, ON/Burlington, CWHL).
Botterill becomes the seventh player to score 50 goals as a member of the NWT.
Canada’s scoring was spread around on Tuesday, with Katie Weatherston (Thunder Bay,ON/Ottawa, CWHL) and Gina
Kingsbury (Rouyn-Noranda, QC/Calgary, WWHL) also getting first-period goals.
Canada extended its lead in the second. Martine Garland (Toronto, ON/Univ. of New Hampshire, HE) scored her
first-career goal as a member of the NWT, stuffing in a puck after a nice cross-crease pass from Kelly
Bechard (Sedley, SK/Calgary, WWHL). Hayley Wickenheiser (Shaunavon, SK/Calgary, WWHL) then scored a pair of
goals to make it 6-0, a lead Canada took into the third.
Sarah Vaillancourt (Sherbrooke, QC/Harvard Univ., ECAC) scored at 12:03 of the third, followed shortly by
Botterill’s 50th goal.
Sami Jo Small (Winnipeg, MB/Mississauga, CWHL) made 12 saves for the shutout.
Canada faces Finland on Wednesday in the first game of the 4 Nations Cup for both teams.
