Game Story

RANGERS REMAIN PERFECT WITH WIN OVER MAJOR MIDGETS

DAVID BRIEN

QUISPAMSIS, N.B. – Jason Pineo, James Turner, William Calverley and Sean Josling had a goal and an assist apiece to the lead the North York Rangers to a 5-3 win over the Dartmouth Major Midgets on Tuesday afternoon at the 2016 TELUS Cup.

The Rangers kept pace with the Lions du Lac St-Louis atop the preliminary round standings with their second win in as many days, while the Major Midgets dropped their second game in a row.

Daniel Tsiampas had the other goal for North York, while Kyle Henderson made 19 saves for the win.
For Dartmouth, Andrew Coxhead and Brett Thorne were in on all three goals, posting a goal and two assists each. Jordan McKenna had the other Major Midgets goal.

Tsiampas got the ball rolling on an early power play, taking a cross-crease pass from Josling and one-timing a quick shot past Brendan Cregan just 3:46 into the first period.

Dartmouth answered with a power-play goal of its own midway through the opening frame off the stick of Coxhead, but Pineo went five-hole on Cregan at 15:27 to restore the North York lead, and Turner scored 2:10 after that to send the Central Region champions to the dressing room with a 3-1 lead after one period.

North York outshot Dartmouth 9-3 in the first period, but the Major Midgets found their offence in the second, holding a 13-12 advantage, although the Rangers had the edge again on the scoreboard.

Josling converted on the power play at 9:05, beating Cregan with a perfect wrist shot inside the far post to make it 4-1, but McKenna buried the rebound of a Thorne breakaway chance to get the Atlantic Region representatives back within two.

Calverley added to the Rangers’ lead at 15:28, giving North York a 5-2 advantage through 40 minutes.
The lone goal of the third period came from Thorne, who listed a shot over a sprawling Henderson with eight-and-a-half minutes left to pull the Major Midgets back within two.

North York will look to remain undefeated when it takes on the host Saint John Vito’s in the evening game Wednesday at the qplex (7:30 p.m. AT), while Dartmouth tries again to get into the win column against the 2-0 Lions du Lac St-Louis (noon AT).
