CANTONNIERS WIN AGAIN, DOWN MACS AT TELUS CUP
JASON LA ROSE
THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Alexandre Doucet and Justin Robidas scored goals in the second period to break open a tie game and lead the Cantonniers de Magog to their second win in as many days at the 2019 TELUS Cup, 3-1 over the Halifax Macs on Tuesday afternoon.
The Cantonniers are the third Quebec Region team in the last four years to open the schedule with consecutive wins at Canada’s National Midget Championship.
Isaac Belliveau had the other goal for Magog, which got 27 saves from Olivier Adam.
Ian Watt was the lone goal-scorer for the Macs, who saw their record fall to 1-1.
Both teams struck on the power play in the first period; Belliveau gathered in a rebound in the slot and beat Macs goaltender Jacob Goobie just 92 seconds in, but Watt took a cross-seam feed from Logan Carruthers and snapped a shot past Adam before the midway mark of the opening frame.
Magog converted again on the man advantage only 35 seconds into the second period when Doucet hammered a low one-timer past a stretched-out Goobie, giving the Cantonniers all the offence they would need.
Robidas added insurance just past the 14-minute mark of the middle stanza, picking up a loose puck and circling into the high slot before beating Goobie to the blocker side.
The Cantonniers smothered Halifax in the third period, allowing only two shots on goal. Magog had a 12-2 edge in the final 20 minutes and a 35-28 advantage overall.
Magog will look to make it three-for-three Wednesday when it faces off against the Calgary Buffaloes (12 p.m. ET), right before the Macs take on the Tisdale Trojans (4 p.m. ET).
