From the 10th pick to the 216th, World Junior A Challenge alumni made a little bit of tournament history last weekend at the 2019 NHL Draft in Vancouver.

Thirty-three alumni had their names called on Friday and Saturday, the most ever taken in a single year – the old mark of 30 was set at last year’s draft, with 28 selected in 2010.

Vasily Podkolzin led the way, going to the Vancouver Canucks with the 10th-overall pick. The Russian co-led the 2018 tournament in scoring, racking up eight points (three goals, five assists) while captaining his country to a silver medal in Bonnyville, Alta.

In all, three alumni went in the first round – Alex Newhook was the 16th pick by the Colorado Avalanche and Ryan Johnson went 31st to the Buffalo Sabres.

Johnson was the first of 10 members of the gold medal-winning United States entry from 2018 to be taken, preceding Shane Pinto (32nd, Ottawa), Bobby Brink (34th, Philadelphia), Robert Mastrosimone (54th, Detroit), Zachary Jones (68th, N.Y. Rangers), Ronnie Attard (72nd, Philadelphia), Trevor Janicke (132nd, Anaheim), Isaiah Saville (135th, Vegas), Josh Nodler (150th, Calgary) and Jack Malone (180th, Vancouver).

Podkolzin, Brink (who was also named MVP in Bonnyville) and Attard were all named to the all-star team in northeastern Alberta, alongside Ilya Nikolayev (88th, Calgary).

Canada West, which won the bronze medal, had six players selected: Newhook, Alexander Campbell (65th, Nashville), Layton Ahac (86th, Vegas), Carter Berger (106th, Florida), Harrison Blaisdell (134th, Winnipeg) and Massimo Rizzo (216th, Carolina).

The 33 alumni selected in Vancouver brings the all-time number to more than 330 drafted since the first World Junior A Challenge in Yorkton and Humboldt, Sask., in 2006.
