CALGARY, Alta. – Rob Blake, general manager of Canada’s National Men’s Team, announced Sunday, in collaboration with Hockey Canada, that three forwards have been added to Canada’s roster for the 2014 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, which will be held May 9-25, 2014 in Minsk, Belarus.
Blake is working with a management group comprised of Ron Hextall (Brandon, Man./Philadelphia, NHL), Brad Treliving (Penticton, B.C./Calgary, NHL) and Hockey Canada’s vice-president of hockey operations Brad Pascall (Coquitlam, B.C.). The management group named a roster of 20 players on April 17, and added a third goaltender and 21st player earlier this week, Justin Peters (Blyth, Ont./Carolina, NHL).
Blake announced the addition of three forwards:
Nathan MacKinnon | Cole Harbour, N.S. | Colorado Avalanche (NHL)
Matt Read | Ilderton, Ont. | Philadelphia Flyers (NHL)
Brayden Schenn | Saskatoon, Sask. | Philadelphia Flyers (NHL)
Blake also announced that forward David Perron (Sherbrooke, Que./Edmonton, NHL) will no longer play for Canada at the 2014 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship after aggravating a previous injury while training.
With today’s announcement, Canada’s roster now includes 23 players: three goaltenders, seven defencemen and 13 forwards.
Canada’s roster now includes 18 players with previous international experience, with six players (Burrows, Chimera, Methot, Myers, Read, Reimer) who represented Canada at previous world championships (Turris skated as an alternate player with Canada in 2008). Chimera won gold at the 2007 IIHF World Championship in Moscow, Russia.
Kevin Bieksa, Troy Brouwer, Jason Garrison, Ben Scrivens and Joel Ward will be representing Canada on the international stage for the first time.
Canada can officially register a maximum of 25 players with the IIHF for the world championship, including three goaltenders. The initial official registration will be on May 8, but additional players can be registered during the tournament as well.
