Game Story

CANADA BLANKS U.S., EVENS WOMEN’S U18 SERIES

JASON LA ROSE

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – Madelyn McArthur (St. Catharines, Ont./Oakville, PWHL) turned aside each and every one of the 26 shots she faced, backstopping Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team to a 3-0 win over the United States on Friday night.

The victory evens the series at a game apiece ahead of the finale Sunday (9:30 a.m. ET/6:30 a.m. PT).

McArthur has been unbeatable thus far in the series; she made 12 saves in a half-game of work in the series opener Thursday, and has not allowed a goal on 38 shots across more than 87 minutes.

Claire Dalton (Toronto, Ont./Toronto, PWHL) and Zoe Boyd (Caledon, Ont./Mississauga, PWHL) led the offence for the Canadians, recording a goal and an assist apiece.

Sarah Fillier (Georgetown, Ont./Oakville, PWHL) opened the scoring just past the eight-minute mark with Canada on the penalty kill, forcing a turnover in the neutral zone before picking her spot over the short-side shoulder of U.S. goaltender Calla Frank for a shorthanded marker.

Dalton doubled the advantage at 3:42 of the second, splitting the American defence and going to the backhand to beat Frank, and Boyd jumped in off the blue-line to find a loose puck and make it 3-0 on the power play at 9:54 of the middle frame.

That would be more than enough offence for McArthur, who was at her busiest in the third period when the U.S. directed 11 shots her way.
