TURNBULL SCORES, BUT WOMEN’S DEVELOPMENT TEAM FALLS TO U.S.
JASON LA ROSE
CALGARY, Alta. – Blayre Turnbull (Stellarton, N.S./University of Wisconsin, WCHA) scored midway through the third period, but Canada’s National Women’s Development Team dropped the opener of its three-game series against the United States on Thursday night by a 2-1 score.
The game was the first between the North American rivals at the under-22/development level in more than two years; the loss dropped Canada’s all-time record against the Americans to 16-13-2.
Meghan Dufault (Winnipeg, Man./University of North Dakota, WCHA) was the only other Canadian skater to record a point, picking up the lone assist on Turnbull’s goal, while Emerance Maschmeyer (Bruderheim, Alta./Harvard University, ECAC) made 22 saves between the pipes.
Dana Trivigno and Shiann Darkangelo scored the U.S. goals.
Despite Canada holding an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal in the first period, it was the U.S. scoring the only goal in the opening 20 minutes; Trivigno’s shot hit a Canadian stick and popped up and over Maschmeyer for a 1-0 American lead at 11:42.
The U.S. carried a little more of the play in the second period, outshooting Canada 12-9, and doubled its lead on the power play late in the middle frame when Darkangelo stepped out from the side of the net and beat Maschmeyer along the ice.
Turnbull finally got Canada on the board with 8:15 to go, keeping on a two-on-one and beating U.S. netminder Alex Rigsby to the far side, but that would be as close as the Canadians got.
Canada finished with a 27-24 advantage in shots on goal.
The series resumes Friday afternoon (3 p.m. MT) at WinSport’s Markin MacPhail Centre at Canada Olympic Park, before wrapping up on Sunday morning (10 a.m. MT).
